2023 Oram Award winner afromerm – also known as Cil – is a South London-born sound artist, composer, producer and poet. Her practice combines electronic music vocal and poetic disciplines to construct intricate, evolving soundscapes that draw from contemporary, jazz and cinematic sound-worlds. Juniper, a motion-reactive instrument Cil built in 2020 as part on ongoing research project, is a tool she uses on stage as afromerm, to manipulate sound: from live loops, to elements of synthesis, to the timbres of her live collaborators.
afromerm’s debut independent release ‘held’ received recognition from independent press, NTS and BBC Radio, where afromerm was named a “Sonic Innovator” by Martha, who hosted the late Annie Nightingale's 2023 Boxing Day show on Radio 1.
